One Word Photo Challenge: Glow-in-the-Dark

Daytime: Fluorite in Fluorescent Lighting

Daytime: Fluorite in Fluorescent Lighting

Night Time orite in Long Wave UV Light

Night-time: Fluorite in Long Wave UV Light

These two photos are of the same crystal of fluorite under different light sources.

It was found at the Flamboro Quarry, near Dundas, Ontario

It is  no longer in our collection, but I believe it was about 4 cm on the longest dimension.

Inclusions of hydrocarbon lend the golden brown colour to the daytime shot.

They are also responsible for the glow-in-the dark effect under long wave ultra violet light.

And since I couldn’t get this funny bird’s “daytime / night-time” voice out of my head

I thought I’d share the joy.

  1. Lovely images, Maggie, thank you. I particularly like the fluorite crystal and the birds. 😉

  2. Our national TV carrier used to screen ‘Walk on the Wild Side’, and I watched it without failing to piss meself laughing. The Brits have some wonderful writers, and that’s a fact ! As well, the voices used are of well-known comedians, and it was fun trying to recognise ’em.

  3. The crystal was very nice, but the video made me laugh out loud 😀

  4. Was that Monty Python? Oh, the monkeys were a riot–oh, that’s rank! Thanks for the good night laugh, Maggie! 🙂 🙂

  5. The video is superb, thanks for the laugh! Your photos are good too….. 🙂

  6. This crystal is absolutely beautiful! And the video is a nice touch. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  7. I could spend hours in the geological part of the Natural History Museum, particularly the area with the phosphorescent stones.
I really liked this prompt. My creation is quite different. It can be found here.

  8. Perfect pairing. Had seen the daytime/nightime segment, but had never seen the entire video or heard of Walk on the Wild Side. Will look for more. Thanks, Maggie!

  9. Thanks for the little video – I lived in UK when those talking animal BBC shows where aired – my highlight of my TV week. Thanks for the big breakfast smile – and i love the view on your glowing too *smile
